Meet the Co-Chair of Women Leaders in Life Sciences Law: Elona Kogan

WLSL

Meet Elona Kogan,  co-chair of ACI’s upcoming Women Leaders in Life Sciences Law Summit. Elona shares with us her career path, a best practice tip and more…

  • Tell us about your background and career path to date.

My parents brought me to America because it is the greatest country on earth – this is where dreams are made. When I was about 7, I decided that my dream was to be an attorney because so many people in this world need someone else to speak up for them. Growing up in a predominantly emigrant English second language community reinforced my belief in the need and importance of representation and advocacy across all socio-demographic lines.

  • Tell us the best advice you have received about achieving success.

Always go for it – if you want it, work for “it”.

  • Tell us about your favorite thing to do outside of work.

I thrive on observation and learning.  Most recently, I have been absorbed with studying the World Cup group/player dynamics, the role that fans play in supporting their teams, and the varied coaching styles that were on display at crucial game time moments.  It’s been fascinating to watch how literally – blood, sweat and tears -come together on the field to win or lose.

  • Give us one tip/best practice for achieving a happy life and happy career – think of what you would like attendees to walk away from the conference with.

Be true to yourself. Each of us is responsible and accountable to our families, our managers, our boards, our organizations. But most of all, we are accountable first and foremost to ourselves and this is the highest standard that we must meet.  Start and end your day by affirming that you have done all that you can to the best of your ability.

  • What is the top substantive law issue facing the life sciences industry to watch out for in 2014? (ie FCPA compliance, Sunshine Act, IP issues, preemption and products liability)

Our economy and industry has been built on innovation — as members of society, and stakeholders in consumption of health care products and services, we must ensure that innovation continues to be encouraged and rewarded. Through communication and legislation, we need to continue to support our ability to develop that which is most meaningful to us – products and services that improve and prolong life.

  • If you had a theme song, what would it be?
