In KPMG International\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/kpmg.com\/xx\/en\/our-insights\/risk-and-regulation\/2026-kpmg-global-cco-survey.html\" target=\"_blank\">2026 Global Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer Survey<\/a>,\u201d three key themes stand out highlighting current trends in the perspectives of compliance leaders today:<\/p>\r\n \r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>CCOs believe that fortifying operational resilience in cybersecurity and data privacy is paramount to better addressing interconnected cyber, third-party, and regulatory risks.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Many CCOS are cautiously optimistic about AI\u2019s role in compliance; and<\/li>\r\n\t<li>CCOs are no longer perceived strictly as rule enforcers, but as strategic value creators.<\/li><\/ul>\r\n \r\n       <p>According to the survey findings, for example, the majority of CCOs are focused on improving cybersecurity and integrating data analytics into third-party risk management as primary investment drivers. Specifically, 75 percent of 725 compliance leaders surveyed said cybersecurity and data privacy are key areas they\u2019re looking into for additional investment.<\/p>\r\n \r\n       <p>\u201cThis research shows that organizational risks are becoming more tightly connected,\u201d Harri Leppiniemi, a risk consulting partner at KPMG in Finland, said in the report. \u201cCyber threats, data, third parties, regulation, and AI all affect resilience and can no longer be managed in isolation.\u201d<\/p>\r\n \r\n       <p>The report further highlighted how CCOs are \u201cuniquely positioned\u201d to help their organizations implement a unified risk framework that connects cybersecurity and data protection with the organization\u2019s legal and regulatory obligations. One practical example cited in the report: Develop a common risk taxonomy and centralized repository to get a truly integrated view of risk across the enterprise and value chain.<\/p>\r\n \r\n       <p>\u201cOne of the clearest messages from the research is that the value of compliance increasingly comes from how well it supports the business through change,\u201d said Siiri Luoma, legal counsel at KPMG in Finland. \u201cThe priority is to identify new requirements early, strengthen governance, and help the organization respond before issues escalate. For the compliance function to be truly effective, it must act as a strategic partner to leadership.\u201d<\/p>\r\n \r\n       <p>CCOs also have a role to play in the governance of AI by ensuring that regulatory requirements and data protection principles are embedded into AI systems from the outset. This speaks to the importance of CCOs having a seat at the table when the organization is adopting new AI technologies.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanconference.com\/cco-summit\/agenda\/\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"display: block; width: fit-content; margin: 0 auto 36px;\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.americanconference.com\/cco-summit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2254\/2026\/10\/702L27_feathr_abandonform_728x90.png\" alt=\"Chief Compliance Officer Summit\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\" class=\"ad-col-sm\"><\/a>\r\n \r\n       <p>Overall, CCOs are confident in their abilities to collaborate with the various business functions to support business objectives. Eighty-one percent of CCO leaders surveyed said they\u2019re confident in collaborating with cybersecurity teams to effectively manage cybersecurity compliance risks. Sixty-eight percent expressed confidence in collaborating with business continuity teams to address critical operations, and 67 percent expressed confidence in assessing compliance synergies across functions, such as legal, human resources, investigations, internal audit, and operations.<\/p>\r\n \r\n       <p><strong>CCO compensation trends<\/strong><\/p>\r\n \r\n       <p>A separate report found that recent CCO compensation trends align with the increasing value that compliance leaders bring to organizations. BarkerGilmore\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/barkergilmore.com\/research-report\/2026-chief-compliance-officer-compensation-report\/\" target=\"_blank\">2026 Chief Compliance Officer Compensation Report<\/a>\u201d shows how CCO compensation has increased by organization size.<\/p>\r\n \r\n       <p>Among public companies, the median total compensation increases from $500,000 at organizations under $500 million in revenue to $638,000 at organizations above $5 billion in revenue. The report also found that 90th percentile compensation exceeds $1.2 million among organizations above $5 billion in revenue.<\/p>\r\n \r\n       <p>Among private companies, the median total compensation increases from $380,000 to $771,000 across the same revenue range, and 75th percentile compensation exceeds $1 million among organizations above $5 billion in revenue.<\/p>\r\n \r\n       <p>\u201cOrganizations increasingly view the chief compliance officer as a strategic business leader, rather than solely a technical compliance expert,\u201d said John Gilmore, managing partner of BarkerGilmore. \u201cAs a result, chief compliance officer executive search assignments have become more competitive, particularly among organizations seeking leaders who can influence culture, manage enterprise risk, support business objectives, and serve as trusted advisors to executive leadership teams and boards.\u201d<\/p>\r\n \r\n       <p>These CCO trends and more will be discussed at the American Conference Institute\u2019s inaugural \u201cChief Compliance Officer Summit\u201d on Dec. 9, in Washington, DC.
