Cathleen M. Combs is member of the law firm of Edelman Combs Latturner & Goodwin, LLC in Chicago, Illinois, a firm which specializes in representing consumers, primarily in class actions. She formerly supervised the Northwest office of the Legal Assistance Foundation of Chicago, where she was lead or co-counsel in class actions in the areas of unemployment compensation, prison law, social security law, and consumer law.  She joined what is now Edelman Combs Latturner & Goodwin, LLC in early 1991.  The firm has been involved in hundreds of cases, mostly class actions, challenging predatory mortgage, payday, automobile financing and credit card and other lending and collection practices and pursuing claims under Truth in Lending, Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and Fair Credit Reporting Act and other consumer protection statutes.  Ms. Combs has argued over fifteen cases in the 1st, 3rd and 7th Circuit Court of Appeals and the Illinois Appellate Court, including the recent en banc decision Suesz v. Med-1 Solutions, LLC., 734 F.3d 684 (7th Cir. 2014), which reversed Newsom v. Friedman, 76 F.3d 813 (7th Cir. 1996) and its definition of “judicial district or similar legal entity”under the Fair Debt Collection Practice Act’s venue provision, 15 U.S.C. §1692i.  She received an Award for Excellence in Pro Bono Service from the Judges of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the Chicago Chapter of the Federal Bar Association on May 18, 2012.  She has a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and a J.D. from Loyola University of Chicago Law School.
