Michael Dondarski has been a member of the Sanctions Compliance and Evaluation team at the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) since 2008. In his capacity as the Chief of Regulated Industries Oversight and Evaluation, he plays a leading role in OFAC’s enforcement investigations of financial institutions, has worked some of OFAC’s largest ever settlement cases, and manages a team of talented sanctions compliance investigators. For example, since the start of 2014, Michael has overseen a process that has resulted in numerous settlements and civil monetary penalties with regulated financial institutions totaling more than $1.7 billion. Michael has helped coordinate OFAC’s identification and analysis of new and emerging non-transparent payment practices designed to evade U.S. economic sanctions. Michael has been an integral component in coordinating and implementing OFAC’s international outreach regarding Iran sanctions, including the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act of 2010, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012, and the Joint Plan of Action. He has advised on thousands of inquiries on both in-process transactions and general questions on compliance with OFAC’s economic sanctions programs, provides daily consultation to financial institutions and international trading entities, and participates in outreach events to the domestic and international financial services community.
