ROBERT D. GOODMAN is Partner at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP. Mr. Goodman focuses his practice on insurance coverage disputes and counseling, products liability litigation and other mass torts, as well as complex commercial litigations and arbitrations. Mr. Goodman has represented a wide variety of clients, including both insurers and defendants in the underlying litigations, in matters involving the full range of personal injury and mass tort matters, including over 25 years of experience in asbestos-related litigation. Mr. Goodman is recognized by Chambers USA (2006-2016), which notes that clients call on Mr. Goodman “for all types of complex commercial litigation including major insurance coverage disputes and arbitrations” and that he has “particular experience in managing litigation and associated bankruptcy issues arising from asbestos liability;” Mr. Goodman is an “experienced litigator” and who is “held in high regard by clients who value the consistent quality of his service.” He is also recognized as a “National Litigation Star” by Benchmark Litigation (2015). Mr. Goodman currently represents a leading property casualty insurer in connection with a major asbestos bankruptcy, as well as related state court coverage matters. Other current and recent matters include representations of a number of insurance clients in connection with coverage disputes arising out of asbestos, environmental and products liability exposures, as well as the recent efforts to enact federal asbestos reform legislation. Mr. Goodman has represented clients in connection with personal injury and property damage claims arising out of the September 11 terrorist attacks, litigation involving pharmaceuticals and medical devices, and litigation involving allegations of “repetitive stress injury” resulting from use of computer keyboards. Mr. Goodman also represented a major Japanese corporation in connection with a commercial arbitration arising from a dispute with a large U.S. manufacturer. Mr. Goodman’s practice has involved class actions, consolidations and federal multidistrict proceedings. Mr. Goodman’s practice has also involved litigation in a number of well-known “high-risk” jurisdictions, including state courts in Mississippi, Texas and West Virginia. Mr. Goodman has also served on the Editorial Board of Insurance Coverage Law Bulletin and as a member of the Insurance Coverage Litigation Committees of the Litigation and Tort Trial and the Insurance Practice Sections of the American Bar Association and as a member of the New York State Bar Association’s Insurance Law Committee.
