Based on industry demand, ACI ispleased to present its inaugural
Women Leaders in Retail and Consumer Products Law conference, July 20-21 in Washington D.C., a forum aimed at promoting woman-to-woman networking and mentorship and facilitating high-level discussion of the challenges and opportunities facing like-minded women in the retail and consumer products legal community.
In the wake of increasing retail news, including the recent
Office Depot debacle (the retailer will pay regulators $3.4 million to settle charges that it did not report defects of two of its office chair models fast enough, even after receiving over 200 complaints), statistics show that full acceptance in the retail & consumer products law industry still eludes women.
In a
recent Huffington Post article, Shauna Martin, CEO of Daily Greens (who also has over 18 years of experience as a corporate attorney, and has obtained a variety of awards recognizing her work, which includes technology law, mergers and acquisitions, financing, and corporate matters
) discussed the challenges women still face in the workplace, stating “Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In inspires me. Sandberg and I began our careers at similar times, when 50% of individuals graduating from most higher education programs were females. Yet 20 years later, there are still less than 10% of us in the C suite. I love her examination of why this continues to happen.”
Women in leadership roles dominate the retail and consumer products space, yet hiring and managing partner positions are still closely guarded by their male counterparts. While there are no easy answers in this space, Women Leaders in Retail & Consumer Products Law will facilitate mentorship opportunities and help form new connections amongst women leaders as well as provide a forum for candid discussion of gender stereotypes and other implicit obstacles to advancement, and to talk about what has worked for other similarly situated women lawyers in the retail and consumer products industry when faced with gender-specific challenges.
