Tell us about yourself:
Shana T. Mintz is an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) at the United States Attorneys’ Office for the Central District of California, where she has worked for more than nine years in the Civil Division, Civil Fraud Section
I received my B.A. in Political Science from UCLA, magna cum laude in 1991, and my J.D. from UCLA School of Law in 1994. I am a native Southern Californian who is not a big fan of cold weather. In my spare time I enjoy yoga, spinning, and tap dancing. I am a baseball fan, animal lover (especially dogs), and love to travel.
Tell us what a day is like in your field:
My primary area of practice is investigating and prosecuting civil fraud cases under the False Claims Act, 31 U.S.C. § 3729 et seq., including all types of healthcare fraud and defense contractor fraud. In addition to my busy False Claims Act practice, I handle civil penalty and other regulatory matters for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Los Angeles Field Division. My DEA work includes cases against physicians, pharmacies, and distributors for violations of the Controlled Substances Act.
Tell us what you like about working at your company:
Working for the government has its challenges (shutdowns, hiring freezes, etc.), but the sophistication and diversity of my work, and the satisfaction of protecting government programs and interests, more than overcomes those challenges.
Tell us what you would change in the industry:
I don’t see compliance as a priority for the industry. Companies are far more focused on the bottom line. A good compliance program in the long run will cost less than the trouble created by a bad or non-existent compliance program.
Give us one best practice tip:
Make compliance a priority – it is worth the investment. And remember, actions speak louder than works – both in life and in compliance programs.
