Tell us about yourself:

I am a decorated Gulf War veteran who recently published a book entitled Eve Was Framed.  I love playing hockey.  I have done stand-up comedy, bungee jumping, scuba, fencing, and I tried to cook once.  I have a Juris Doctorate, a Master’s in Business Administration and I am, surprisingly enough, a member of Mensa. Tell us what a day is like in your field: In-house counsel is endearingly the ADD of the legal profession.  A single day can encompass issues involving employment law, product liability, litigation, marketing, dispute resolution, general transactions with sales, sourcing and IT, intellectual property, mergers and the one-stop lawyering questions that interrupt the regularly scheduled work program. Tell us what you like about working at your company: I enjoy finding the delicate balance between risk mitigation and efficiency; this can be difficult if not daunting when tackling the daily grind.  I revel in streamlining processes to create greater efficiencies using existing resources which allow the overall organization to improve its risk profile while simultaneously equipping it to move at the speed of business. Tell us what you would change in the industry: If I could change one thing about the healthcare industry, it would be to introduce more proactive treatments and rehabilitation to the general population.  Consumers continue to increase spending on medical products and pharmaceuticals.  The medical industry is there to fill a need; how much better to address the needs earlier on in the process when the general quality of life can be retained!    Recognizing that the rates of those affected with serious medical conditions will continue to escalate (with some disease populations doubling or tripling within a mere decade), it would behoove all parties to begin to invest in improved preventative programs under the medical umbrella. Give us one best practice tip: The greatest advice or tip I could offer is this:  the people who know most about the quality of the sausage are the people who prepare the meat and those who eat it.  The people actually on the ground doing the work should be consulted when tackling any major endeavor.  You may think you know how things are done.  You can read all the policies and procedures governing any particular behavior but until you consulted with those doing the work – you only know a fraction of the process.  Equally, the recipients of the final product will provide significant insight as to the company’s reputation and the product’s quality.  Don’t be afraid to get feedback and accept critique with an open mind.
